I think the above statement is true. Bacteria can exchange genetic material through; transformation where the bacterium takes up foreign DNA from its surroundings, Through transduction; where viruses carry bacterial gene from one bacterium to another, also through conjugation; where two temporarily joined bacteria directly transfer genetic material.
