The building blocks of starch are the simple sugars (monosaccharides) known as glucose. So, break down of glucose (glycolysis) in order to produce energy (ATP) occurs in the cytosol of the cell. Glycolysis is a metabolic pathway which consists of series of reactions that extract energy from glucose by splitting it into molecules called pyruvates.
