It was part of President Abraham Lincolns Gettysburg address in 1863 when America was in the midst of a civil war. The ''Unfinished work'' or "great task remaining before" was addressed to Americans that they had to complete/finish what they started: Win war, unite as a union and bring slavery to an end.
